July 2018 Giveaway
1950’s Venus Manual Wind Mechanical Watch, w/Two Brennyn NATO Straps
This month, DCVW and Brennyn Straps are offering - in a departure from our normal vintage Seiko offerings - a 1950s Venus mechanical watch for the July monthly giveaway. While no longer in existence, Venus was a respected producer of watch movements. It was absorbed into Valjoux (perhaps you’ve heard of them?), which is today part of ETA in the Swatch Group.
Venus was established in 1923 in Switzerland, and produced its first chronograph movement, the Calibre 103, in 1933. Venus quickly became famous for chronograph movements, many of which were used by high-end Swiss brands. The Venus column wheel chronograph calibres are widely regarded today as being some of the finest produced and remain in great demand.
Venus went from strength to strength between the 1930s and 1960s, the latter of which witnessed the company organizing glamorous events, such as in Athens in 1966, chosen to highlight Greece’s mythical connection with the iconic “Venus de Milo” watch and worn on the occasion by the famous Hollywood actress, Jane Mansfield. At the same time, the watches became so respected that even Leonid Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Union, wore a Venus watch on his wrist.
Venus also produced cam switching movements, but these low-cost movements unfortunately did not provide sufficient liquidity, leading to Venus’ absorption by rival Valjoux in 1966. The then-new Venus 188 movement was the basis for the Valjoux’s famous 7730 movement, which then evolved into the 7750 – this latter movement continues to live on as one of the most popular chronograph movements in horology. Stock of vintage Venus movements have been depleted in recent years, leading to a run-up in prices for watches with these movements.
