Yema, known outside France as LeJour, was common in the 1960's through the early 1980's and specialized, in part, in the manufacture of mid-level dress and dive watches, such as this 1960's example here. Starting as a large manufacture of pocket watches in the 1960s, Yema/LeJour was founded in 1965 and operated through the early 1980's.
As noted recently by Australian watch periodical Time + Tide, “If you didn’t spend much time diving in the Azure Seas in coastal France in the late ’60s, chances are you may not be entirely familiar with the French brand Yema. With its most popular models having a subdued appearance, and not featuring ‘Swiss Made’ plastered all over the dial, it can be easy for the eye to wander past their offerings and settle on something with a much older name. Those who love to feel their heart lurch when seeing the price tag of a flashy piece won’t find that same pleasure with the competitive costs on display here, either.”
What is well known about this era – the 1960’s – is they were an exciting time for diving. Famed French diver Jacques Cousteau was involved with a set of three projects to build underwater "villages,” with each ensuing project was aimed at increasing the depth at which people continuously lived under water, and were an attempt at creating an environment in which men could live and work on the sea floor. That said, Cousteau was so much more than just a diver; he was also a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher – he was also a filmmaker.
The Yema puts many watches from the same era to shame with its superb finish, dial and standout Arabic numerals colors – sure to bring a pop of style to your day and invites attention from those around you.
