The 51xx family of Seiko midrange automatic movements - like this near new-old stock (NOS) quite colorful 5126-8130 "rally" diver here - were short lived, produced in the late 1960’s into the early 1970’s.

The 51xx movements debuted in 1967, and consisted of three dial models, with the 23-jeweled 5126 here one of them; it ceased production in 1971.  Each of these three 5126 rallys has different dials, albeit with similarities - each dial has bright white luminous plots that meet an overlay cap at the minute track painted either blue, black, or orange, with a printed “5” badge and baby blue “Sports” designation dress the dials along with a 70m waterproof designation.  The hour and minute hands are striped and have painted tips to match the overlay caps.

In 1997 the 5126-8130 was reissued with a 7S26 movement - that Seiko reissued this watch with the 7S26 movement, with no noticeable change to the design elements from the 1969 original, is proof of the enduring aesthetics design.  Despite this, opinion seems united in the consideration of the 7S26 movement as an inferior movement, vis-a-vis the original 5126, despite the fact the latter possessing a true day and date quickset.

Of note, the 5126’s quickset date pusher is located coaxially inside the crown - akin to that on the famed 6139 - and this function was the namesake for the Seiko “Presimatic” line.

This 1969 Seiko 5126 rally, comes with a brown leather rally strap (naturally), nylon NATO strap, spring bar tool, and Pelican travel case.
