There exist numerous vintage Seiko divers popular with "Seikoholics" collectors, but none more so than the venerable 6309 series for sale here - an all original early 1981 Seiko 6309-7049 automatic diver.
The 6309 series of diving watches was the third generation of Seiko’s recreational/professional divers. The 6309 line replaced the 6105 in 1976 and was produced until 1988, when Seiko replaced it with the 7002 diver. 6309’s were a successful effort by Seiko to improve the 6105 movement, which allowed for greater lifespan, robustness, and ease of maintenance – not to mention they look great on the wrist.
The 6309 line was produced in two separate case variations: an earlier cushion case, popularly known as the “turtle” for the appearance of its cushion case, which was produced between 1976-88 (offered for sale here), and a slimmer case version from 1982-88. The 6309 was popular with the U.S. military, akin to the Seiko model it replaced, the 6105 - its (much more expensive) forefather - and quickly became the staple of the working diver. The 7049 was designated for the North American market, and the 7040 was for the Japanese Domestic market and the rest of the world.
This Seiko 6309 diver comes with a rubber Seiko dive strap, "seatbelt" NATO strap, Pelican travel case, and springbar tool.
1981 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic Dive Watch
DIAL: Original black Suwa-signed Seiko dial. The dial's date window has a deep bevel around it (unlike the cheap 6309 aftermarket dials), characteristic of the Suwa dials. Of important note, the red dial font has not faded to an off yellow, which we often see. Original patina’ed hands; Spanish/English day variants and date at the beveled 3 o'clock position work correctly as designed. Lume shines brightly.
BEZEL: Bi-directional and firmly ratchets with an excellent click. Seiko font and lume pip at 12 o’clock position. This bezel is in excellent shape, impressive for the age of the watch and the fact that these are normally the first to be damaged when this hardy dive watch is used as designed.
CASE: Original hefty 44mm (w/o crown, 44.5mm with) x 45mm stainless steel cushion case in pre-loved condition. Matching original caseback.
CRYSTAL: Likely original hardlex crystal, no major scratches.
BAND: Black high quality "seatbelt" NATO strap, with stainless-steel hardware, a comfortable and stylish manner to complete this vintage Seiko 6309. This 6309 also comes with a rubber Seiko dive strap (not original).
MOVEMENT: Original 6300-series Seiko automatic movement, 17 jewels, manufactured in February 1981, which beats at 21,600 beats per hour.
CROWN: Original screw-down unsigned stainless steel crown.
