Dr. Joseph MacInnis & The HMS Breadalbane
Joseph Beverly MacInnis CM (born 02/MAR/1937) is a Canadian physician, author, and diver. In 1974, MacInnis was the first scientist to dive in the near-freezing waters beneath the North Pole, and in 1976 he became a member of the Order of Canada.
MacInnis currently studies leadership in high risk environments and gives leadership presentations in North America and Europe. His audiences have included Microsoft, IBM, National Geographic, Rolex, Visa, Toyota and the U.S. Naval Academy.
MacInnis led ten research expeditions under the Arctic Ocean, and he was among the first people to dive to the wreck of the RMS Titanic. In 2012 he was a medical advisor and journalist on the James Cameron-National Geographic seven-mile science dive into the Mariana Trench.
MacInnis has worked with the U.S. Navy, the Canadian Forces and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has written ten books, to include his latest, "Deep Leadership: Essential Insights from High Risk Environments."
While diving in 1975, MacInnis - at this point, he had taken part in more than 100 major dives and expeditions - found a fragment of the HMS Breadalbane, the northernmost known shipwreck in the world, a British merchant ship that sank in the Arctic in 1853. MacInnis headed the first expedition to find the wreck of Breadalbane in August 1978. In August 1980, after a three-year search, the ship was discovered by Coast Guard cutter John A. Macdonald using side-scan sonar. The first images showed her hull intact and two of her masts still standing.
In 1981, supported by the Canadian Coast Guard, the National Geographic Society, and others, the group returned. A remotely piloted submersible was used to examine the wreck, which took the first color photographs and video footage - the images showed the bow, masts, rudder and anchor, and the wood appeared new. In 1983, further visits to the Breadalbane were conducted by Sea-Otter, a submersible, and the WASP, an atmospheric diving suit similar to the Newtsuit.
The Rolex Submariner? Do we really need to discuss this legendary dive watch?
Well, maybe we will for a second - the Submariner is a line of sports watches designed for diving and manufactured by Rolex. The first Submariner was introduced to the public in 1954 at the Basel Watch Fair, and was the first watch to be waterproof up to 100 metres (330 ft).
The Rolex Submariner is considered "a classic among wristwatches," manufactured by one of the world's most widely recognized luxury brands. Due to its immense popularity, there are numerous homage watches by well-established watchmakers, as well as illegal counterfeits.
Today, the Submariner models are equipped with Rolex Calibres 3230 and 3235, respectively, and feature luminescent hour markers, a unidirectional rotatable bezel with Cerachrom ceramic insert, and a solid-link Oyster bracelet. Also upgraded with time, since the mid-1950s? Contemporary Submariner models underwater diving depth rating is 300 metres (1,000 ft). Impressive, to say the very least.
