Original vintage 1985 Rolex advertisement for the Rolex Submariner - "Aquanaut Sylvia Earle probes earth's other space.

Dimensions: 7.50 inches wide by 10.5 inches high.

Throughout her career, Dr. Earle made significant scientific contributions that have helped the scientific community better understand the deep-sea ecosystem and the importance of protecting it.  She was part of the team that developed the first underwater habitat for humans, where she led the first all-female team of aquanauts in the Tektite II project.  She was one of the first scientists to call attention to the environmental damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, and she worked tirelessly to raise awareness of its long-term effects on marine life.  Her advocacy helped lead to policy and regulation changes to prevent future oil spills.

When Sylvia spoke to the United Nations in 2014 wearing a dive watch, she handed it to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and explained that it symbolized how little time we have left to protect the ocean.  This statement reflects Dr. Earle’s life work, which has helped create marine protected areas (MPA) where wildlife can thrive without human interference. In 2009, she launched Mission Blue, a global initiative to inspire public support for MPAs.   To date, Mission Blue has helped create over 100 MPAs globally, with over 2 million square miles of the ocean protected.

The Rolex Submariner?  Do we really need to discuss this legendary dive watch?

Well, maybe we will for a second - the Submariner is a line of sports watches designed for diving and manufactured by Rolex.  The first Submariner was introduced to the public in 1954 at the Basel Watch Fair, and was the first watch to be waterproof up to 100 metres (330 ft).

The Rolex Submariner is considered "a classic among wristwatches," manufactured by one of the world's most widely recognized luxury brands.  Due to its immense popularity, there are numerous homage watches by well-established watchmakers, as well as illegal counterfeits.

Today, the Submariner models are equipped with Rolex Calibres 3230 and 3235, respectively, and feature luminescent hour markers, a unidirectional rotatable bezel with Cerachrom ceramic insert, and a solid-link Oyster bracelet.  Also upgraded with time, since the mid-1950s?  Contemporary Submariner models underwater diving depth rating is 300 metres (1,000 ft).  Impressive, to say the very least.

Dr. Sylvia Earle, "Aquanaut"

Sylvia Earle is a woman who has spent her life exploring the ocean and fighting to protect it.  Growing up by the New Jersey coast, Sylvia spent many hours swimming and exploring the tidal pools and beaches in the area.  She attended Florida State University and later received her master's and doctoral degrees from Duke University (1966), where she was one of the first women accepted into the program.  Her dissertation focused on the behavior of eels and the electric fields they generate, allowing her to conduct research and participate in deep-sea diving expeditions.

Sylvia was inspired by the work of earlier oceanographers, such as Jacques Cousteau and Dr. Eugenie Clark, to see the ocean as a frontier that was still largely unexplored.  Her passion for marine biology and her drive to protect the ocean has made her one of the most influential figures in the field.  She has spent more than 7,000 hours underwater exploring the ocean and studying its inhabitants and has even set world records for deep-sea diving!   Dr. Earle’s academic achievements and scientific contributions are even more impressive and have earned her the nickname "Her Deepness," and made her a hero in oceanography and to many people who share her love for the sea.

As an oceanographer and a deep-sea diver, she witnessed the effects of pollution, overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction on marine ecosystems.  She has seen coral reefs dying because of rising ocean temperatures and ocean acidification caused by carbon emissions.  In addition, she has observed the effects of overfishing, including the depletion of fish populations and the destruction of ocean habitats.  Through her experiences and scientific research, Sylvia has become a leading advocate for ocean conservation and worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the dangers facing the ocean and its inhabitants.
