Swiss "saucer" watches – such as this atypically-shaped 19700s Systema "Saucer" mechanical watch here, on a vintage Japanese stainless-steel bracelet – were popular and quite reminiscent of the late 1960’s and 1970’s chic. Easily discernible, vintage watch saucer timepieces obtained their nickname from the distinctive saucer-like shape of its stainless-steel case, which resembled a UFO.
Systema was a brand name registered by the Swiss watchmaker Systema Watch SA (originally Fellow Watch SA), which produced mechanical timepieces primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. Originally founded in Switzerland as Fellow Watch SA, in early 1959, Bernard Feller’s interest in the company was taken over by Walter Hasler and Walter Rufli.
Following the 1959 takeover, the company was officially renamed Systema Watch SA, and they began producing and marketing watches under the Systema brand name. Systema watches were primarily known for their mid-century, Swiss-made mechanical movements (frequently utilizing 17-jewel or 25-jewel mechanisms). Their watch models frequently featured the Incabloc shock-protection system, sleek gold-plated cases, and "extra flat" dial designs
Like many traditional Swiss mechanical watchmakers of the era, the company faced significant economic pressures and went bankrupt in 1984.
This Systema saucer comes on a vintage Japanese Bambi stainless-steel bracelet, and with black nylon strap, rugged travel case, and spring bar tool.
