Seiko is known for its iconic dive watches – but it also makes some lesser-known watches, some of which can be rather…wild. One of these is the Seiko Metronome, like the new-in-box 2022 Seiko SMW006A full set here, with original Seiko hang tag, Seiko instructions, Seiko warranty, and inner/outer boxes.
Released in 2022, Seiko’s Metronome watch is a quirky, highly-specialized watch that lacks a rotating bezel. But is does, however, feature something a Seiko diver doesn’t, a built-in metronome with a tempo range of 40 to 304 beats per minute; for the uninitiated, a metronome is a device that creates a steady beat (either audibly or visually) measured by BPM (Beats Per Minute) to help musicians stay on rhythm.
Aside from the quirkiness of this watch, it’s difficult to underestimate just how unique it is – can you count how many times you’ve seen a watch with this complication? We can. Zero.
Initially made in several different colors, the white dial one remains the most crisp – important when a watch has so much going on, dial-wise. Despite this, the white dial somehow manages to take on a sparse look, bordering on Bauhaus, probably due to its relegation of “business” to the outer areas of the dial, leaving the center relatively uncomplicated – Seiko put some serious thought into this one.
Originally developed for musicians, the Metronome returned in 2026 thanks to none other than Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment fame. The legendary Japanese designer quietly dropped two new variants of the watch via his online concept store VA Tokyo, one with a black dial and the other white.
As we are fond of saying, 1969 was one of the most spectacular in Seiko’s storied history. That year, it released the world’s first automatic chronograph, the Calibre 6139 and the V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) movement, which delivered Seiko’s highest yet level of precision for a mechanical movement.
Seiko would release another first upon the world, the first quartz wristwatch - the Seiko Quartz Astron, which went on to change the way the world told time, and severely tested the dominance of the Swiss, bringing high technology within the reach of all.
This Seiko Metronome comes on its original leather strap, and with nylon strap, rugged travel case, Seiko Metronome instructions manual, Seiko Metronome hang tag, Seiko warranty paperwork, and springbar tool.
