Cartier has created innovative and elegant watches for both men and women for over a century - like this 2015 Cartier Tank Solo Ref. Founded in 1847, Cartier is an instantly recognized brand, which has evolved into one of the most prestigious jewelers in the world with a long history of sale to royal families - for his coronation in 1902, British King Edward VII ordered 27 tiaras and issued a royal warrant to Cartier in 1904.  Similar warrants soon followed from the courts of Spain, Portugal, Russia, and the House of Orleans.
 
In 1904, the Brazilian pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier of the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying.  Cartier designed a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. 
 
Cartier further refined the design, and introduced the Tank model in 1918 – designed by Louis Cartier himself – inspired by newly introduced battle tanks on the Western Front in World War I when seen from above, with a square and rectangle-like design and a strap seamlessly integrated into vertical sidebars called "brancards."  
 
Cartier helped to popularize wrist watches with men, and with the Cartier debut of the Tank, it became an immediate icon as the first wristwatch with a square case.  Along with the Rolex Submariner, the Cartier Tank has the distinction of being one of the most, if not the most, imitated watches in the world.  Yet the Tank, for most of its history, was quite rare and for many years made in very small numbers, often fewer than a hundred a year – in 1919, the first year of full production, Cartier produced…six.  
 
The Tank is more easily available today, but it continues to be one of the most desired, and most influential, timepieces in the world.  Since its iconic debut, unique with its clean, crisp lines and an elegant dial, it has gone through multiple evolutions, but like most, the Cartier Tank Solo here features a stainless steel case that closely aligns with the width of the black leather strap, with a silver opaline dial with blue steel hands and black Roman numerals, a Cartier standard through its history.
